Serving Others - Based on Romans 12:3-8
Service starts with God! When we serve others, we’re actually serving God. The dictionary says that “serve” has more than twenty meanings! The word “serve” can mean to offer food, to help, to spend time, to work, to give honor, and to be obedient.
The Bible says we all have special gifts or talents we can use to serve others. “God’s grace has been given to me. So here is what I say to every one of you. Don’t think of yourself more highly than you should. Be reasonable when you think about yourself. Keep in mind the faith God has given to each of you. 4 Each of us has one body with many parts. And the parts do not all have the same purpose. 5 So also we are many persons. But in Christ we are one body. And each part of the body belongs to all the other parts. 6 We all have gifts. They differ according to the grace God has given to each of us. Do you have the gift of prophecy? Then use it according to the faith you have. 7 If your gift is serving, then serve. If it is teaching, then teach. 8 Is it encouraging others? Then encourage them. Is it giving to others? Then give freely. Is it being a leader? Then work hard at it. Is it showing mercy? Then do it cheerfully.” Romans 12:3-8

God has given each of us special gifts to use for him. How should we serve God? God wants us to serve others cheerfully. Wouldn’t it be awful if everyone in our lives were grumpy and unwilling to help? Jesus is a great example of how to be a willing servant of God. He even died on the cross for us! When we choose to serve God, we start a chain reaction of events. By serving God, we also serve others. Everything we do as we serve God has an effect on our world. Even the little things we do can ripple out and affect our whole world.
Family Discussion Questions:
- How can you be a willing servant at home? With your friends?
- Why does God want you to serve cheerfully? (Because we are serving in His name.)
- What gifts do you have that you could use to serve others?
